Drawing - DWG Format

Files with a File Extension DWG extension indicate vector-based image data in either 2D or 3D. The DWG stands for "drawing” and was originally denoted in the Interact CAD (computer aided design) package developed in the 1970s and purchased by AutoDesk in the 1980s.

File Extension DWG is the most widely used format for CAD drawings in existence. AutoDesk controls the DWG format. They license a read/write application to non-competitors for use in opening the files. It is closely related to the DXF format which is an ASCII or binary rendition of DWG. DXF, which stands for Drawing Exchange Format, was created by AutoDesk in 1982 in order for files created in AutoCAD to be opened by other programs.
